Project

Retrofit existing buildings, looking to the future.

To meet the growing needs of environmental sustainability, energy saving and people’s well-being, building renovation requires a deep innovation in technologies, materials and processes.

MImeSIS project answers to this challenge.

Goals

MImeSIS aims at improving the performance of the existing building stock
by developing new generation solutions for the building envelope:

Connected

Sensorized materials for 24/7 self-diagnosis and alerting

PROS

MAINTAINING OPTIMAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Integrated

Compatible and perfectly integrated into the historic built environment, both listed and non-listed

PROS

POSSIBILITY OF REALIZATION IN MANY REGULATED BUILDING CONTEXTS

Sustainable

Low environmental impact and compliant to the principles of the circular economy

PROS

REDUCED IMPACT ON DOMESTIC ENVIRONMENT, URBAN AND PLANET

High-performance

Reduced energy consumption, optimal thermo-hygrometric conditions and durability

PROS

ENERGY SAVING. INDOOR WELLNESS. RELIABILITY OVER TIME

Activities

During the project the researchers will work on the development of 5 specific results

Sensor solutions and related measurement chain

able to monitor 24/7 specific key indicators of the “health status” of masonries and identify preventive interventions to ensure optimal operating conditions and avoid degradation and wear

Sensorized masonry prototypes

manufactured with materials commonly used for construction and renovation of the building envelope: bricks, mortars, plasters, adhesives, reinforcement systems, coatings, …

Experimental validation

both in laboratory and on site, of the functionality, effectiveness and durability of the smart systems developed (material – sensor integration) and definition of specific PROTOCOLS of experimental tests to confirm the reliability and durability of smart systems over time

Guidelines

for the installation and maintenance of integrated sensorized solutions

Demonstration laboratory

both physical and digital, to accelerate the technological transfer of the developed solutions.

Roadmap

Phase 1

Measuring chains implementation of the reference parameters in the smart (sensor + material) system

Phase 2

Development and Prototyping of smart sensorized materials for durability, comfort and energy performance control

Phase 3

Development and Prototyping of sensorized smart materials for the diagnosis of deformations, defects, detachments

Phase 4

Laboratory characterization and validation of integrated systems using full scale masonry models

Phase 5
